Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Plans)
Medicare Part D is a prescription drug coverage program offered by the federal government to help Medicare beneficiaries afford the cost of prescription medications. It was introduced in 2006 as part of the Medicare Modernization Act.
Part D plans are provided by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans offer coverage for a wide range of prescription drugs, including both generic and brand-name medications. Beneficiaries typically pay a monthly premium, an annual deductible, and co-payments or co-insurance for their medications.
Medicare Part D is optional and available to anyone eligible for Medicare, regardless of income or health status. However, to enroll, beneficiaries must either join a standalone Part D plan (for those with Original Medicare) or select a Medicare Advantage plan (Part C) that includes prescription drug coverage.
Overall, Medicare Part D helps seniors and people with disabilities manage their prescription drug costs, providing access to essential medications and helping to improve health outcomes.
